Howl O Weenie Pet & Pal Parade and Costume contest was held in the Zephyr Stadium Parking Lot on Halloween Day, 10/31/09, from 12-4 p.m. This Halloween themed fundraiser event featured a costume contest with a variety of fantastic prizes. Pets competed for prizes with or without their human pal being in costume as well.
As a family fun Halloween themed event, there was other things for the humans, both young and old, to do as well.
Raffles for a number of prizes, including the highly coveted Grand Raffle Prizes, was held.
Food was available, (some wonderful jambalaya!) including Howling Wienies, chips, soft drinks, homemade baked treats, and other delicious offerings. We also have some wonderful Don Pablo Gourmet Coffee samples that we'll be handing out, so don't miss that!
Our baker for the bake sale is a devoted volunteer for Metairie Humane, and had Halloween treats for both people and their pets. When was the last time you had a candy apple or a cupcake with Halloween sprinkles topping it? These are the kinds of yummy treats that money seldom can buy and most of us haven't got the time or skills to make!
Kids participated in the Alligator Eyeball Soup Stirring, temporary tattoos, and Feed the Dogs. The Pumpkin Patch featured mysterious gifts being randomly hidden in bags.
There were wonderful gifts and gift certificates, the Grand Raffles prizes were highly coveted prizes. These tickets were only $1 each, or get 6 tickets for $5.
Our celebrity judges for the Halloween pet costume contest include Steve Mortillaro, Rosalie Mortillaro and Laura Buchtel.
Lots of people came to help support a great cause, find themselves a great prize in a raffle, and have a lot of fun with the entire family, including their pet!

Isn't she beautiful?
Grasso is a pensioned special needs dog who often acts as a model for outfits. She's been around a long time, and believes she rules the roost. Her favorite technique to try and get an extra treat is to "be cute" with her shoulder-dipping curtsy.

For everyone who supports Metairie Humane's 100% no-kill philosophy, we thank you profusely. We also ask that you support the companies that have so generously donated to Metairie Humane by purchasing their products and services. These companies obviously believe in making a difference even if it doesn't make national headlines!
*****
Many of these companies are small local businesses that believe in our community. Some of these companies are far larger ones located in distant places that also believe in our community. We cannot express enough gratitude to all of them equally.
*****
The real differences happen when organizations at the local level put themselves on the front line to ensure that things get better, it does not happen with fancy press releases and long speeches in some distant venue under the lights of cameras and the sound bites of the national news.

Did you know that one of Metairie Humane's long term goals is to have a low-cost veterinary clinic available?

This little fellow was full of charm and appeal.
*****
This can only happen with the community's involvement with events such as the HowlOWeenie, during which most of the year's funding is raised.

Pet ownership is one of the least expensive and most rewarding ways to extend not only a person's lifespan but their quality of life. Pets help prevent depression, encourage mobility, provide companionship, and often alert their elderly companions of sounds that may have been unnoticed or unheard.

A little prince was too cute for words!

Never give a pet as a gift, especially a "surprise" gift. The real surprise may be discovering that it is an unwanted surprise. Pets are family members and their selection & adoption should be well thought out prior to the adoption. Many pets given as gifts end up in shelters after the gifting occasion because of the lack of consideration given to both the pet's and recipient's needs. Pets are not like a sweater--they cannot simply be returned if they are not a good fit!

Look at this lovely lady bug and her humanized lady bug! The human pal even had a darling lady bug temporary tattoo to match, how much more coordinated could a pair be (or how cute can we find!)

This little fellow was quite debonair as a pirate!

With every event, there are the people who make it a success. Volunteers often have very thankless tasks and devote hours of work to ensure an events' success. Metairie Humane has NO paid staff members, so everything is done by volunteers every day of the year. We want to offer a special thanks to the following people (in no particular order, we appreciate everyone's efforts!)
